I've learned so much fom this class it's ridiculous! I studied art at school and have always considered myself 'arty' but always put off actually painting anything, mainly due to lacking knowledge of the techniques and materials required. Within a few weeks I've been taught the tips and tricks to be able to create something that I'm really proud of. It has set me off on a whole new creative path, and I'm finally confident enough to stop procrastinating and start painting! Sam Dunmore (Bath)
Will is a truly inspiring, kind and accessible art teacher. I have never before been taught the tools of the trade (eg how to draw, how colour works, what different mediums are capable of). These fundamental building blocks have made all the difference to what I can create and how confident I feel in my skills. It helps that his teaching style is so open, encouraging and aware of all the many reasons we tell ourselves we can’t paint. The fact that he clearly gets it all and can in an instant tell you what minor adjustment would help is so valuable in learning more intuitive art-skills too. I had been through a long period of serious ill health when i started this time and found the classes and being creative in a quietly guided space just what i needed to re-engage with world (and myself). I couldn’t recommend Wills classes strongly enough I just wish there were more like him. Kate Beckett (Bristol)
Wills painting class great, I was an absolute beginner having never painted before but now after 6 of his classes I’m having lots of fun painting as a hobby in my free time. It gave me the confidence to paint for fun and I now hand paint cards for friends and family which is lovely. JJ Buckle (Bristol)
Just a quick email to thank you for last night. I really enjoyed the class of course, but also your kindness and encouragement.I'm looking forward to next week. Best wishes, Emilie Poletto (Bristol)
Thank you Will, I have so enjoyed your art course. I’ve learnt loads, met some lovely people and most importantly have re-gained my confidence to put pen or paint brush to paper. I’ve never felt under any pressure to produce a masterpiece and your encouragement and teaching style has made the whole experience most enjoyable. I’ve never known 2 hours go by so quickly and feel as if I’ve re-discovered my artistic mojo! Liz Robinson, Bristol
You've been an absolute star in sharing your joy and skills with our group! I was very pleasantly surprised by the mix of techniques and materials that passed through my hands during the course and enjoyed your encouraging teaching style! Thanks for an excellent introduction: getting creative weekly with you made me pick up a pencil and sketch outdoors plus encouraged me to do a first street art piece in Bristol. Let's create! Tessa, 27 years, traffic engineer, from the Netherlands
Will's classes were thoroughly enjoyable and really satisfying. Some people no doubt have a talent for drawing, but Will teaches techniques that mean you can get good results in a short time. The atmosphere of the class was friendly and encouraging. We explored a range of different media week on week, and I feel I have a hobby for life, Thank you Will! Nicky Yeeles, Bristol
Thank you for your support, encouragement and patience on my recent course. I was inspired by your teaching and would thoroughly recommend the course to all, including complete beginners like myself. Brenda Hannan(Bristol)
As a side note my 10 year old son was so impressed with the few things I've drawn that I showed him the techniques you taught us and he was drawing marine animals that night because he wanted to practice. Its great to see him do that! Ally McDowell(Bristol)
'I really liked Will's art classes. He has been very encouraging and supportive during the whole course duration. It has been a very enjoyable class especially for beginners like me as you get the chance to try different types of art: pencil and charcoal, watercolours, acrylics etc. Many thanks for this great experience!'Paola Scaccianoce (Bristol)
Like many of the others I had not picked up a paintbrush for over 50 years and don’t have particularly happy memories of art at school but the wonderfully relaxed atmosphere you engender is great . I can’t believe how much I have learned ; I find it so absorbing . One very positive aspect of doing the class I wasn’t expecting is how much more I get out of going to exhibitions and galleries and appreciating the skill, technique and sheer genius of some artists.I missed the lesson last week as I was in London staying with my son but took in 2 amazing exhibitions ….one at Tate Britain …loads of Freud and others as well as the Titians and others at the Royal Academy . I got so much more out of it looking at the brush strokes , shading , blending etc . Brilliant and thanks for helping me see things a bit more clearly. All the best John Bensted (Bristol)
This is just to say how much I enjoyed your art class and I am practising as much as possible. Judith Sirratt (Bristol)
I just wanted to say a massive thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable series of classes at Bristol Grammar School. I won't know what to do with myself on a Tuesday evening now! Josie Granger (Bristol)
I was quick to ditch art at school as soon as I had the chance but as the daughter of an artist I had always been curious to know whether I have inherited any artistic ability and if so, what it might look like. When a flyer came through my letter box advertising art classes for beginners with Will Stevens I decided this was my moment. What I loved about Will’s teaching style was the way he took the mystery out of drawing and encouraged us to simply have a go. I found his down- to- earth approach enabling, supportive and practical. Each lesson began with a brief but inspiring demonstration, a bit of teaching about how the great masters did it, and some practical tips to help us with the new technique of the week. Techniques included pencil, ink, charcoal, acrylic pastel and watercolour. Much to my delight all art materials are included in the price of the course so there was no additional expenditure nor anything to remember to bring along.
I chose my own subject matter from a collection of images pulled from magazines and after several weeks had my first go at a still life. Sitting and concentrating on the task in hand, I could almost feel that a different part of my brain was being exercised and urged into life. Switching off and simply concentrating on what I am trying to achieve in the moment makes me realise that I need more of this in my life.
My partner was genuinely interested in seeing my weekly masterpiece and I gained a sense of satisfaction at turning “can’t” into ”can”. I am suitably inspired to enrol on a further ten-week session. It is the perfect antidote to autumn/winter and long cold dark evenings and at £47 for ten sessions is fantastic value for money.SPARK MAGAZINE REVIEW AUTUMN 2006
Will - your class and teaching style are brilliant! Kathryn Briggs, Bristol
I’m sorry I didn’t get chance to speak to you at the end of the session at Ashley Down last Wednesday evening.Just to say thanks very much for an interesting and varied 10 weeks. I have learnt lots and I now look at paintings and drawings differently. It has also helped me identify what I am interested in. S Basterfield, Bristol
I want to say a big 'thank you' to you for running the class. I really enjoyed it. Being allowed to play with lashings of paint, pastels, chalk and as much paper as I liked was a treat.
It's also a way to rid the thoughts of everything else as you do have to concentrate. It's all very Zen!
Many thanks for putting it on,
Jacqui (Bristol)
February 2011 I was fortunate to attend three of the taster sessions during my lunch hour which Will ran in the Sky Art Den (Bath Central Library) as part of the Literary Festival. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed the creative side of art, and my creative streak has been awoken again. I believe this experience was only bettered by Will's teaching style, the way he demonstrated techniques and provided the support and guidance and encouragement in the right amounts. To top this I have just been informed that I have won the Sky Arts Creative Fund which I entered at the festival, this now means I have the passion to proceed and a £1,000 prize fund to spend on creative courses of my choice, and I am looking forward to spending some of this with Will at his Manvers Street art courses on a Monday morning in Bath. Thanks Will.
MIKE PLOWS, BATH
I hadn't touched a pencil since doing O level 'Geometrical and Engineering Drawing' nearly fifty years ago. I really enjoyed your classes; it is rare for two hours to fly by of an evening. Thank you and well done. Gerard Ginestier, Bristol
I was attracted to attend the course because of the info on the web site – both its description and the testimonials. Well it is exactly as it says it is. Will is an inspirational teacher. Patiently and with a great deal of sensitivity, understanding and artistic skill he guides us through new techniques and approaches each week to build our own knowledge and confidence. The lovely thing is that he has confidence in all of us – no matter where we start from. I was surprised at what I managed to produce as did others. Right from the first session we were drawing and drawing stuff that is pleasing so it continually builds confidence. In each session there is just the right mix between instruction and a chance to try things out . Will explains and demonstrates some techniques and we go off and practice and he comes around to see how we are doing offering advice and guidance where wanted. A number of attendees have been coming for a while and they get on with their individual pieces. The atmosphere is lovely. The people who come are interested and keen to have a go, even if some feel a little reticent at first. If you want some social interaction you can get that too and can get coffee/tea at a minimum cost. All art materials are provided free. For me, as for another attendee who exchanged views with me, the balance is perfect – Will’s character, enthusiasm knowledge and teaching ability, the amount we cover each week, the balance of ‘instruction’ to practising, and the build up of our knowledge and skill. I have become so interested, and though I haven’t drawn for about 40 years, I have now sought and been accepted on an Access Art and Design Course. Thanks Will I have learned a lot and have a new ‘career’ ahead of me. Marilyn Wedgwood July 2011
Will is very relaxed in his approach and gives constant encouragement together with constructive feedback, all of which is very helpful for an absolute, not-very-confident, beginner like me! The classes are excellant value as he packs in a lot of info to each class, covers a range of techniques and also provides all the materials and equipment. Sue, Bath
Having never been taught art before I have really enjoyed the classes, learning about some of the mysteries of drawing and painting in such a relaxed and informal atmosphere. My friends have been impressed with what I have produced and I look forward to returning at the end of April.
Maria Nicholas
"As with all great teachers, Will's demonstrations made every technique look so easy. But the startling thing was, that following his guidance things did become easier than I'd ever imagined. Whether it was simply copying, drawing freehand or using a wide range of paint materials, he made me realise that I could draw and paint and achieve recognisable and pleasing results. I am delighted that his classes have awakened a creative streak that I was essentially unaware of, with the result that I am now spending hours each week engrossed in my new hobby." Barry Fowler, 58
In my youth I had wanted to be an artist but my family were so hostile to this idea I had to get a proper job – so I became a scientist. My husband found an advert for Will Stevens lessons in Painting and Drawing and encouraged me to go. It has been so incredible going each week to Will’s classes and getting in touch with the old me. Every week we have examined new techniques and learnt new skills. I have come to realize that the way the great masters worked was full of scientific logic, experimentation and painstaking planning. I have learnt so much from Will. It has made me realise how bad my art teachers at school were. They believed in talent as an accident of birth. I now see artistic ability as something everyone has but that needs developing with a good teacher like Will Stevens. Diana Elliot
Thank you for all your help Will we really enjoyed the course. Theresa & Mairead
As well as all the required materials, Will provides expertise, encouragement and boundless enthusiasm for 'giving it a go': this ranges across a variety of techniques and approaches to various media. As well as a short demonstration, each session includes a mini-slideshow explaining how various artists have mastered the challenge. This, coupled with Will's compendious and seemingly effortless expertise, builds up to a real appreciation of 'Art'.
But there is nothing stuffy about our evenings: everybody is inspired 'to give it a try' -sometimes with surprising results, sometimes not -but there is no competition, only friendly encouragement from the group.
I don't normally respond to leaflets through the letterbox and I don't normally write commendations -but as I sign up for my third series of classes, I am so glad that I did the former and am delighted to do the latter! RICHARD FORD, BATH
As a keen and interested 'mature' beginner, I have found the classes pitched at exactly the right level. During each session, Will gives one or more practical demonstrations on each technique and explains some of the pitfalls to avoid and what to notice or aim for. He also provides guidance and encouragement on experimentation and to not be too 'frightened'! The course is excellent value for money as both materials and instruction are included.

I joined Will’s Paint & Draw course in Cairns Road on Wednesday mornings in January 2008. Although a number of years ago I had been in a painting group for several years elsewhere in Bristol, this is the first time I have had formal teaching in line drawing, using different mediums. I am absolutely delighted with the course, for various reasons. First is Will’s own talent as an artist and as a teacher, second is his friendly and supportive nature, third the fact that he supplies all the materials we need for any lesson, fourth is the instruction itself. Each week he takes us into a different aspect of drawing or painting, or colouring in a succinct and cheerful manner encouraging us to try it for ourselves. He gives confidence and the fact that many in his groups have been coming for years is proof enough of his manner of teaching and skills. Last but not least is the very good value for money of 10 lessons of 2 hours each – and if by any chance you can’t get to a lesson, Will is always willing to fit you into another of his classes at another time. Thank you very much Will, you give me confidence to keep trying to improve any drawing talent I have and strengthen and hone other skills where I am weak (which is in the area of colouring and painting). Jane Bragge, Bristol
Hi Will! I had the good news this morning that I got an overall distinction for my HNC course, and I’ve got a place on the Drawing and Applied Art course at Bower Ashton. Yes! Here’s a few words for your website:-
I found Will Stevens’ courses both stimulating and encouraging. So much so that I decided after a couple of years to do a Foundation Diploma course in fine art, followed by an HNC in fine art. I have now been accepted onto a degree course. Thank you, Will!. JANET ROOME
I didn’t have the opportunity to do art at school and thought that I couldn’t do it. Going to Will’s class is easy - he provides all the materials, gives demonstrations and away you go! You get a chance to try many different mediums and you don’t have to be good! He has given me the confidence to try things out, not worry about making mistakes and have a lot of fun. Now I am thinking of moving on to an art foundation course. Dee Jarlett St Werburghs
A very friendly and enjoyable way to spend a few hours a week. With no pressure to produce masterpieces, you can simply relax and let Will guide you through using a range pf materials to explore your creative side. Karen, Henleaze
Just a quick email to say sorry I cant come tonight to art class as morning sickness has taken its toll, and unfortunately Im on holiday for the last session. …but just say that I have thoroughly enjoyed your lessons and Ive picked up SO many tips, as well as trying things Ive never tried before…my school art teachers were really not encouraging and we could never do A-level art, so its great to have another stab- you do have a good way of explaining things and making it seem possible for anyone (and if its not possible, then HEY! it doesnt matter! Just have a go!) J URQUHART,BRISTOL
I've always had an appreciation of art (in all its forms) and been extremely envious of those able to produce it - something I've felt was definitely beyond my capabilities. But I've just had a confidence boost - I found Will Stevens Art Classes for Beginners! The classes are non-competitive, relaxed and informal, with the emphasis on enjoyment, having fun and just "having a go" rather than pressured to produce brilliance. With Will's encouragement and support and a knowledge of techniques (and with lots and lots of practice!) personal achievement can now be realised! Thank you. PAMELA D BRISTOL
Really enjoyed your classes. E Wright, Bath
Will's classes started me on a new life journey, bringing out a creative element that had been dormant since school. Will's enthusiasm for the subject is infectious. He nurtured and encouraged me in all aspects of art. Will's good teaching gave me the confidence to move onto a Fine Art Foundation course and now work towards a Fine Art Degree. Karen H Bristol
I'm so glad I can rejoin the class--not only are you so helpful but it is also very therapeutic!! Barbara K, Bath
This course demystified a lot of things for me, as well as teaching tecdhniques employed by artists over history. I learnt more about drawing to scale and shading, as well as more about painting than I learnt as GCSE years ago!Emma Wiles
I am retired and attend and Art Class run by Will. I am suprised how much progress I have made. There is a friendly atmosphere and I can't think of a better way of meeting people of all ages and spending a couple of very enjoyable hours each week. Naomi, Bishopston
Just wanted to say a Big Thank You for such inspiring and fun art classes. I don't know how you manage to cater for everyone, young and not so young, beginners and experiences painters. To think that I could not draw even a straight line when I first came and I was so nervous, and now I have managed to draw a couple of faces and painted some landscapes hurray! Your class has given me confidence and a hobby that I find relaxing and rewarding. It certainly is a hobby that reduces stress levels as it is so totally absorbing and the time fly's by but in a gentle way. Look forward to coming again in the Autumn. Elaine Newcombe, Bath
A few sincere, quotable words as promised...You have helped me to rediscover art and the pleasure of using art materials after a 10 year absence. Having learned at a school I
wasn't sure what else this class would teach me. My experience at your class has been a new take on how to paint and draw. You have taught me in a different way to my schoolteachers and I am learning every week. I think you are a naturally great communicator. Your style cuts through the "need to achieve, need to be the best" thoughts that I often have. In my view, no-one should feel 'performance anxiety' at your classes as your non-judgemental outlook diffuses to the participants and creates a supportive group attitude. Thanks for your guidance,
Alex Ivory, Horfield
An inspiring course! Will is always very encouraging and supportive so that however hard a technique might seem, we achieve far more than expected and are keen to keep on trying week after week. Can't wait for next term! Sue Perrin , Redland
Really enjoyed the art class on Tuesday nights, its been ages since I picked up a pencil and got creative and it's been a great escape from the stresses of work.I found the atmosphere comfortable and I was able to enjoy myself without having the pressure of having to produce a work of art. Your guidance was also encouraging. Debra Watson, Bristol
Very enjoyable class especially for beginners. Very interesting to try all medias. I would highly recommend it.Brenda Gray, Bath
I thoroughly enjoyed every minute and learnt so many things each week. Will is so enthusiastic and a brilliant teacher. I look forward to the next course. Thanks Sue Williams, Bath
I came as an absoloute beginner and tapped into a hidden talent. I've enjoyed it so much that I can't wait to know more. I would love the chance to go back and do it all again Alex Oliviere-Davies (Bath)
I am a lady of mature years. I found the advertisement on Morrison's notice board. "Art Classes for beginners in Bath". With great trepidation and feeling very nervous I rang the number. Suddenly I had joined the class! I am now in my second term, loving every minute. I feel totally inspired by Will the art teacher, who has given me back my confidence. Everyone in the class is so freindly. I look forward to each week to the class, because it's always different, always something new to learn. Avril Brown, Bath
Genuinely helpful for absoloute beginners and introduces a wide range of basic techniques. Keith Graham, Hotwells
I have enjoyed and valued the drawing classes with Will immensely. I have always considered myself unable to draw at all. Will has shown me techniques I am now able to use to feel ever more confident in attempting to draw. I now appreciate the close observation which is necessary and the importance of light and dark to develop a 3D effect. I was delighted to produce a face which looks like a face and fruits which look round! Will has sown seeds which I know I can practise and improve on and above all given me confidence to try. Bridget Holmes
I joined Will Stevens' art class in 2006. I had never even picked up a paint brush but had always wanted to do some sort of art work. I am 72 and I can't believe the painting and drawing I am doing in such a short time. He takes time with each individual person and gives a lot of encouragement. Mr D Gage, Westbury on Trym
Just a few lines to thank you for your class and your teaching. I have not been your student for long but have attended your drawing class from the beginning of this term and have been impressed with your style of teaching from the beginning. I have learned a lot in a short time, having failed to understand the subject in the past. May you continue your good work for me and future students. Many thanks and best wishes Irene Melas (student)
I really enjoy Will's art classes. There is a good mix of "theory", art history and art techniques, and practical. I particularly enjoy experimenting with paint and colour mixing but I have also amazed myself by producing drawings that actually look like I want them to. I really look forward to Mondays. Sue Phillips, Bath
Will Stevens' classes are a revelation. After a short demonstration, Will lets you get on with creating something better than you dared believe you had inside you. Will gives you confidence, fulfilment and freedom. I thoroughly recommend him.James John, Bath
Will is very willing to share his skills and knowledge in a wide variety of mediums and treats everyone with the same respect and encourages each individual to develop their abilities. Jill Knights, Stoke Bishop
After a weekend at my parents clearing out the loft of all my childhood toys etc. I came across all my old paintings from when I was a toddler through to my school & university days. I had honestly forgotten just how much I enjoyed drawing & painting and I suddenly wanted to have a go again. This prompted immediate action when I returned to Bristol to google ‘art classes in Bristol’ and this is when I found details of Will’s Tuesday night art classes at Bristol Grammar School.
I told a friend at work that I was going to join, as she had also been looking for classes in the Bristol area. We joined in the second term of last years course and I can happily say I have thoroughly enjoyed picking up the paintbrush, pencil and charcoal again and trying new painting and drawing techniques.
I have really enjoyed going to the art classes and would thoroughly recommend them!
Thanks Will.
Nicole (South Gloucestershire)
Thanks to Will, I have been able to realise an ambition to attend an Art Class.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the informative, yet relaxed approach and the opportunity to explore different mediums.
I am hooked! I will be signing up for the next course. Mike Huggins, Stoke Bishop
The class atmosphere is very welcoming and informal. The tutor puts you at your ease. There are demonstrations and power point introductions, then you are soon having a go and getting lots of encouragement. It's a good place to go whatever your level of ability. Colin Sleath, Coombe Dingle
I always really look forward to Wills art class on Wednesday mornings Belinda Waddington, Cotham
I am enjoying Will Stevens' classes enormously and find him a wonderful and encouraging teacher Angela Bailey, Clifton
Less than 2 years ago, at the age of 60 and never having had an art lesson in my life, I started to teach myself watercolour painting. A year later, I fancied trying my hand at other media but was finding it a bit of a struggle trying to work everything out from books. Then I bumped into a lady who told me about Will's classes. There I found highly sympathetic but still honest encouragement and wise advice based on a great deal of teaching experience as well as artistic know-how. I can really recommend Will's classes for beginners wishing to have a go in a non-threatening, indeed highly supportive and friendly environment. Thank you so much Will for helping me further along the road of a great adventure!
Clare Mackintosh, Bristol
"I looked around for a number of drawing and art classes based in Bristol that could teach the basics to me, as well as provide some background info on techniques and styles. Most other introductory classes seemed a bit too pricey for a beginner - and this was by far the best one I came across. A friendly, relaxed and fun class with all materials included - exactly what I wanted. Many thanks for such a good 'art experience'!" Helen Mussell, Bristol
Just wanted to say thank you so much for the classes - I really enjoyed them and have started drawing again for the first time in years. Tamarisk Bowles, Bristol

Thanks for all the really useful stuff taught on the course.
Rebecca Allen, Bristol
I am sad today because Will's 10 week course comes to and end as I have had such a lovely time, but I am happy too because I have learnt so much. We found out about different mediums, how to mix colours, how to create light and shade and how to look at the subject properly. Every lesson was well organized and everything we needed was ready and waiting from little pots of water to mountains of huge sheets of paper.
Pauline Watkin, Bristol
Thank you so much for your art lessons- I have really enjoyed them & have learnt lots! I'm so sad to have to go back to full time work! I shall really miss Thursday afternoons! Hopefully I will be able to come back again in the future. I hope it all goes well and you continue to get lots more students. Thank you so much for your time, effort and much encouragement
Emily Henderson, Bristol
My mum and I found Will's course very enjoyable, and loved how drawing/painting for that couple of hours a week took us out of everyday chores and stresses and concentrating fully on the pencil and paper infront of us was great therapy. Will is a great art teacher, and explained everything very well, and we were both pleasently surprised with our results when putting pencil/brush to paper. I never thought it could be so rewarding.
Lucy Dimery, Bristol
"Hey Mum, that man you drew in art class is on the One Show!" I was really suprised to hear this cry from my daughter and realized then how much I must have learnt in Will's art class. I followed Will's instructions--be bold and draw big, study the face, note the shape, take measurements, do a rough outline, then add areas of shading. I resisted the temptation to draw in the features until the last minute and was amazed to have Johnny Rotten gazing back at me. If I knew I could create a likeness I might have drawn someone pretty!
Sue Thomas, Bristol
I love Will's classes! He holds the space well, instilling a feeling of confidence in my ability to actually be able to draw! Thank you!
Denise B, Bristol
I recently attended Will Stevens' 10 week art class with some trepidation-having had little formal training in anything 'arty' before, I was conscious of the fact that I might be a bit slow on the uptake. But I was really pleasantly surprised and have completed the course with a new found enthusiasm for creating my own artwork. At the beginning of every session, Will started out with a demonstration of the medium we would be using that evening be it water colours, acrylic or charcoal amongst others. These demos gave all of us some confidence in using the techniques Will so skilfully showed us. We were then left to our own devices for a while before returning to be shown some more techniques or examples of work by famous artists.I would highly reccomend his course for both beginners and those who have more experience-for me and my husband (who also attended) it was 2 hours of blissful creativity each the week!
Lucy Pedler, Bristol
Thanks for offering a genuine beginner's art course for all ages.I appreciate -
* the relaxed informal atmosphere*using quality art materials *working at my own pace and level*learning new techniques each week*feeling creative and experimenting *seeing others at work*gaining confidence in new mediums
An extra bonus for me is working in the beautiful environment and the refreshment breaks.
Angela Stavely, Bath
Will delivers a comprehensive, easy to understand and translate into you own art works, class/s, from beginners to more advanced artists. The class is friendly and well stocked with art materials, enough for everyone.
Mary Crowder, Bristol
At school my art teacher asked to me drop the subject and do cookery instead. I have spent most of my life thinking that I was unable to paint or draw. Thanks to Will and his relaxed, supportive and very encouraging style of teaching I have started to draw things that are actually recognisable. I am amazed and delighted and have discovered a new hobby. The class is friendly, all materials are supplied and you work at your own pace. Many thanks Will. I have already signed up to the next course.
Vicky, Bristol
I am sorry two have missed the final two sessions of the term, but I really did enjoy your Paintandraw course at Horfield Parish Church. As an introduction to materials and techniques (for the non-artist) I thought it was excellent.
Regards,
Trevor Birleson Bristol
You have been such a brilliant teacher - not only incredibly talented personally, but somehow managing to make us all feel that we have our own modest talent too, and encouraging us to fill every blank piece of paper each week - whatever the medium. I have tried so many new things over the last few months and each time I come away feeling I really have achieved something (however modest!).
Liddy Hill, Bristol
I have, since I started painting only done Watercolour and came to your class by chance only signing up for the first lesson.
What I found was a fascinating class covering multi media.Through your teaching , extensive knowledge and enthusiasm I have learnt more in a few weeks than the previous 4 years at other classes.
It has been really enjoyable, many thanks Will.
Brian Wolfenden, Bristol
I would like to say how much I have enjoyed the 10 week course.
I wasn’t sure how I would get on with it but this was the perfect taster, and now I am now hooked!
The way you teach the class is excellent. I am already producing work that I didn’t know I was capable of.
One good piece of advice you gave was to keep everything we do. No matter how small or insignificant seeming, it shows week on week that we are making some progress and what we have learned.
Thank you very much for a very enjoyable 10 weeks and for showing us, that if we are patient, we can all learn to produce something.
Karen Woodman, Bristol
I was one of those people who was labelled as an art reject at secondary school. I had no confidence at all that I could possibly produce a worthwhile piece of art. I attended the Paint and Draw class really to give myself a second chance. The course was absolutely brilliant. By teaching very simple techniques for each media I was soon able to produce artwork I could be proud of. It was amazing how using these techniques produced immediate results in the quality of my artwork. My confidence grew enormously. Even when I didn't get things quite right, help was on hand to rescue me. The whole ethos of the class was to encourage and not criticize. Now that I have completed the course I feel inspired to keep on going to produce further artwork so that I can cement the techniques I have been taught.
Best wishes,
Peter Evans, Bristol
Just wanted to say thank you for your lessons and support over the last 10 weeks. It's been an enjoyable way to spend a Wednesday evening. I'm glad I joined and I now feel more confident in trying new art materials/styles etc.
Roseanne Ley, Bristol
for your skill in breaking down the process that makes it possible for a raw beginner to proceed without fear. Thank you for your patience and good humour that makes it easy to go back week after week when there appears to be little progress.
I did learn a lot about drawing and painting (that was always going to be the case, as I started from zero knowledge) but I learned even more about 'me' and my attitude to learning and not succeeding. (That was a new experience for me!) Whatever was happening on the paper, I was able to relax and stay with it and that was entirely down to the safe space you provide for us to learn in.
Many thanks Will, I really have appreciated the time I have spent in your class.
Best wishes

Best wishes
Margaret Wilson, Bristol
Recently I attended one of Will's beginner's classes. I am in my late seventies and yes I have sporadically attended a few other classes with a variety of teachers over the years, so strictly I am not an absolute beginner but I am slightly deaf and slow. Will is a very, very good teacher ( and I say this as an ex-teacher myself) who uses the time admirably, knows what the aim of the lesson is, speaks clearly and is impressive in his ability to get round everyone in his class. I have learned a surprising amount of basic drawing technique, have found confidence and improved. The class is ENJOYABLE.Thanks you so much for a set of fantastic art classes. I didn't really know what to expect when I signed up.
I was amazed at how much I learned in the short introductory talks you gave at the start of each class. Each one left me looking at what I was drawing in a completely different way with a new tool to use.
I'm looking forward to coming back next term and doing the set all over again.
Thanks too for the friendly atmosphere you create. I looked forward to the class each week.
Jenny, Bristol
I have really enjoyed the classes. Clearly a lot of thought and experience has gone into creating the course. It manages to cater for all, allows one to miss one or more sessions, and still provides coherent and progressive input. Each week, there was a good balance of practical demonstration of materials and technique, and plenty of opportunity for us to try it all out for ourselves, with helpful and non-critical guidance. I frequently found myself proudly taking home pieces of my own artwork, which I certainly hadn’t expected! Above all, it was great fun!
Carl, Bristol
